"Bite the bullet"
To endure a painful or difficult situation that is unavoidable.
"Knowing that the surgery would be painful, he decided to bite the bullet and get it over with."
The origin of this idiom dates back to the 19th century when, in the absence of anesthesia, soldiers would bite on a bullet during surgery to help them endure the pain. Over time, it became synonymous with facing up to a difficult situation with courage.
