So for this, the first of the ‘Fun Friday’ series, here’s the idea, take a well known nursery rhyme and get ChatGPT to make it into a short story, very basic prompt, and see what we get!
I'll experiment with better prompts as we go and some other ideas I have.
It may not be your idea of fun, however I enjoyed the process and there’s something quite exciting about waiting to see what you get back. (incidentally I did cut and paste this, no edits apart from some typographical elements,
I think it’s pretty reasonable)
Sorry, I'll get my coat… ;-)
In the heart of the kingdom of Everfall, atop a sprawling ancient wall known as the Weeping Stone, sat Humpty Dumpty. Unlike the egg from the children’s rhyme, this Humpty was a seasoned watchman, shaped by years of solitude and the endless sky. His round, weather-beaten face was familiar to all in the kingdom, a steadfast guardian silhouetted against the horizon.
For years, Humpty had watched from his high perch. He had seen seasons change and storms rage, witnessed quiet loves blossom in hidden alleys and sombre processions of kings long forgotten. His only companions were the crows that nestled in the crannies of the Weeping Stone, sharing whispers of the world below.
But as time wore on, the wall, too, began to show its age. Cracks crept through the stone like creeping ivy, signs of a silent, growing frailty. Humpty, too, felt this shift within his bones; each climb seemed steeper, each watch a little longer.
One fateful day, as the sun bled crimson and gold into the evening sky, a fierce wind rose from the lands beyond. It howled through the wall's breaches, a mournful wail that tugged at Humpty’s cloak and spirit. As he adjusted his stance, a treacherous stone shifted underfoot. With a heart heavy as the setting sun, Humpty felt himself slip.
The fall was a slow dance, a spiralling descent that seemed to last both an instant and a lifetime. As he fell, Humpty saw the faces of the townsfolk flash before his eyes, their lives interwoven with his vigilant presence.
When the king’s horses and the king’s men arrived, they found not a broken shell, but a man cradled by the very wall he had watched over. In his fall, Humpty had become part of the legend of the Weeping Stone—a guardian spirit watching over the kingdom.
In the days that followed, the people of Everfall came to lay flowers and tokens along the wall. They spoke not of Humpty’s end, but of his watch; not of his fall, but of his rise into myth.
And so, in stories and whispers carried on the wind that sweeps over the Weeping Stone, Humpty Dumpty never truly fell. He simply took his place among the legends of the land, forever watching, forever remembered.
