Quixotic (adjective)
Exceedingly idealistic; unrealistic and impractical.
"His quixotic quest to save every endangered species was admirable but ultimately unrealistic given the resources available."
The word "quixotic" comes from the character Don Quixote in Miguel de Cervantes' novel Don Quixote. Don Quixote is a nobleman who, inspired by chivalric ideals, sets out on a quest to right the wrongs of the world, often in impractical and unrealistic ways. The term has since come to describe anyone who is overly idealistic, to the point of being impractical.
