"Let the cat out of the bag"
To reveal a secret, often unintentionally.
"She accidentally let the cat out of the bag about the surprise party when she asked him if he was excited for Saturday."
This idiom dates back to the 18th century when farmers would sell pigs at markets. Unscrupulous sellers would sometimes substitute a cat for a pig, and if the cat was let out of the bag before the buyer left, the deception would be revealed. Over time, the phrase came to mean disclosing a secret.
